The Christian faith is radically dependent on Israel's understanding, both of God and of humanity's vocation before God. No wonder great Christian thinkers have ventured theological inquiries that seek, in an encompassing vision, to do justice to the living God and to give a deeply intelligent account of humanity and the created universe. The modern era has found such unified visions hard to sustain.
