The Christian faith is radically dependent on Israel's understanding, both of God and of humanity's vocation before God. No wonder great Christian thinkers have ventured theological inquiries that seek, in an encompassing vision, to do justice to the living God and to give a deeply intelligent account of humanity and the created universe. The modern era has found such unified visions hard to sustain. For one thing, it views monotheism, not as a mystery of worship and wisdom, but as a victory of Reason; thus it has often traded the living God for a remote, omnipotent "deity" that guides the world. For another, it tends to prize godly experience more than God; thus it has often traded worship for religious self-consciousness. In this book, Catholic theology takes on modern Western religiosity, both as it professes belief in God and as it has settled for various forms of atheism. But more importantly, this book discovers and rediscovers the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, of Moses and the prophets-the God of Jesus Christ. The God who "alone is enough."
