Antecedents and consequences of identifications in a shipyard context
According to this book, organizational identification may simultaneously have multiple targets and both positive and negative consequences. The aim is to search the predictors of organizational identification and to make a partial integration of two previously distinct research traditions: social identity theory and organizational commitment research. The author investigates the effects of identification on extra-role behaviour, and the effects of subgroup and superordinate identifications on intergroup differentiation between the subgroups
The empirical part of this work is based on two samples gathered from a Finnish shipyard. The first sample consisted of the shipyard’s own workforce and the second consisted of employees of 20 different subcontractors working at the same shipyard. The book provides insights for anyone interested in intergroup relations or organizational psychology.
