The Churches Dedicated to St. Clement in Medieval England
England is now a territory politically and culturally as well as geographically distinct from what is now Denmark, Norway, and France, explains Crawford, but it was not so at the time she considers. The medieval cult of pope and saint Clement extended across northern Europe unhindered by border or coastline, and her study must, perforce, follow. After setting out the characteristics of her research project, she describes the cult as a whole. Then she tours the island, discussing local peculiarities and larger similarities in such areas as London and southeastern England, the South Danelaw, the West Midlands and Yorkshire, and Normandy.
