After a description of normal histology, the action of steroid hormones on the cervical tissues is discussed and inflammatory changes are examined. This up-to-date atlas reviews the latest cytologic, histopathologic, immunohistochemical and virological studies including in situ hybridization illustrating an elegant method to identify and differentiate the various types of papilloma viruses. It warns of the worldwide changing and accelerated development of cervical cancer in young women caused by specific types of papilloma viruses, which must be identified in order to give patients proper treatment and care.
