When Edward Hill realises that being labelled one of the 'God Squad' will make his life diffi cult at school, he decides that the best way to get by is to conceal his Christian beliefs. But the longer he allows this policy to continue, the more complicated the questions of youth and early adulthood seem to become. Edward attempts to balance his private religious values and outward pretence, as his life increasingly descends into a state of desperation, solitude and ordinariness. Eventually, he knows that he has to step out of the closet, but can he unravel the doubt and secrecy he has created? And will he ever fi nd peace and fulfilment like at that fi rst moment of discovery, floating in a swimming pool at Hathernwray Hall?
