1922. The Algonquin Round Table was an informal group of famous New York writers who lunched together at the Algonquin Hotel in the 1920s and '30s. The self-appointed leader of the group was Alexander Woollcott. A large, stout man, he was an author, critic and actor noted for his sharp, cruel wit.
