"Maid service," Elise called. There was only silence in return, so she used her master keycard to open the door. She backed into the room pulling her cart behind her. As she turned, the sight of a man lying on the bed in the suite's bedroom startled her and she said, "I'm so sorry, sir. I'll return at a more convenient time." She started to turn her cart around, expecting the usual vitriolic chastisement by an irate passenger, but she stopped because the man just lay there, his eyes open but staring at the ceiling. "Are you okay, sir?" she asked, again expecting some kind of response. "Oh, my God! I think he's dead!" she exclaimed and backed toward the door, suddenly terrified that she might be blamed for his death.
Leaving her cart in the room, she took the service elevator to Deck D, opened the rear door, hurried to the head steward's office at the bow section of the ship and exclaimed, "Mr. Simpson, I think the man in E-16 is dead! He just lays there looking at the ceiling."
