This monograph presents the history of essayism as a modern way of thoughtful subjectivity. However, the author does not focus on the history of a genre, but on the result of this way of thinking. It competes with modern philosophy: Descartes' "cogito ergo sum" was written against Montaignes' doubts, against the narcissistic offending the thinking subject, as it expresses itself in essays.
