We see the traitorous Arnold fighting against his homeland, the vicious war between patriots and Tories in the Carolinas, the magnificent Lafayette, the haughty Cornwallis, the ever-determined Washington, and the bravery of general and common soldier alike. Once the British surrender, the book then follows the news of the battle north, city by city, to Boston, then on to London and Paris, depicting a nation taking its first steps towards brilliance.
