Although millions of buffalo once covered the great plains, the animals were hunted almost to extinction in the 1880s. This is the story of efforts to establish a wildlife preserve in Oklahoma Territory and begin redevelopment of the herds. Fifteen buffalo from the New York Zoological Society were loaded onto a train, and three men were assigned to stand guard on the 1800-mile trip. ? Finalist for the Oklahoma Book Award
