This is a fictitious account of the life of Cudjoe, a real-life character in the history of Ghana. He came from the Ashanti, a tribe of proud warriors, but was sent to the West Indies as a slave. The death of his friends caused him to lead the uprising and revolt of the Maroons in 1738.
