The Mediterranean stands among the most studied regions in the global world history. Tracing Mediterranean History within one book is thus a very ambitious project because already the notion of Mediterranean as well as its historical character are excessively large topics to be analysed within one single study. However, the contributions within the framework of this publication are filling up some pieces of the factured mosaic of Mediterranean history. They are presenting new trends and particular cases in the history of the region, and the reader will traverse the sea many times from the shores of Tunisia and Libya to those of Israel and Turkey, passing by Egypt, Spain and Morocco.
A special focus lies on the Muslim Mediterranean History which is analysed through four different but closely intertwined key-concepts: individual, society, ideology and power. By looking for the traces left behind by individuals in history, the emphasis is put on the relationship between individual, society and different ideologies of power. Along the description of these diverse relations, also their connection to the modernity is discussed.
