This book studies the international legal instruments currently available for the avoidance and settlement of disputes in the space sector. Furthermore, it examines the possibilities of creating new legal mechanisms for the purpose. Various recommendations for meeting topical and emerging challenges related to conflict avoidance and resolution are presented, urging the international community to better take into account the realities of the modern space sector. Today, there exists a myriad of space-related stakeholder groups, many of which do not fit the traditional international legal system very well. Most disputes that have thus far arisen have been resolved through negotiation or the adoption of an ad hoc agreement. Given that the number and complexity of space-related controversies is likely to increase sharply with the on-going growth in space activities, it would be useful, if not necessary, to have better- defined international rules for the settlement of such conflicts.
