A collection of short stores filled with quirky characters, both funny and sad. They would be depressing or desolate in less skillful hands, but Vannatta writes poignantly about this corner of the world and inevitable changes affecting everything but human nature. This series of linked stories follows the Workman family from the Battle of Little Big Horn to the present. George Workman, a member of Custer's army, survives by remaining up on the hill, and he instils in his son, John, a fierce fear of the plains. John's wife goads him into moving from the hill, but when, on the way west, they see three plains stretched out in front of them as far as they can see, John turns the wagon around and returns to the safety of Sunday's Hollow, where the family remains through generations of change.
