Montrose is a beautiful place, situated on the coast of Angus and possessing one of the best beaches in the east of Scotland. It has grown up around its harbour, in use for 900 years and was given a new lease of life by the North Sea oil industry. It currently combines a range of distinguished and impressive buildings both public and private with the charms of a seaside resort with golf courses, camping and caravanning. The town's motto translates as 'the sea enriches and the rose adorns', and this collection of old postcards and new images hopes to persuade the reader how true this is. Tom Valentine spent thirteen years as an electrical technician in the oil industry, working in both Libya and the North Sea. He has since changed career, and spent the past sixteen years involved in young people's care in the Montrose area.
