Life for Carlotte, a middle-aged and twice-divorced American woman, has become mundane. On a whim she moves to France in search for a new life. She falls in love with Michel, a French man engaged to be married, just months after the suicide of his previous wife. Charlotte, against her better judgement, continues her whirlwind romance, and they travel the world together for business. He says he can love two women, equally but differently. Her relationship opens up her troubling past with men and she understands more about her problems of commitment and love. One day, Charlotte discovers a cancerous tumor on Michel. The day of his surgery, the wife discovers his infidelity. Despite being banished from his life by the wife, the mistress and her lover reunite. Michel struggles with his own self-identity, one moment pushing Charlotte away and another begging her to return. She finds herself caught in a web of deception between the man that she loves, his wife, and his brother.
