In addition to preparing students to teach in a culturally pluralistic society, the text covers the essential information on the components of the student teaching experience and helps future teachers develop a questioning, self-monitoring and reflective attitude toward their own decision-making in teaching. Only through direct and thoughtfully planned university experiences (culminating with the final student teaching period) can future teachers be prepared in meeting the needs of the diverse populations they will undoubtedly be hired to teach.
A major shortcoming of teacher education programs at the university level is that they often inadequately prepare our future teacher candidates for successfully meeting the needs of students from diverse cultural, ethnic, and educational backgrounds in our schools. The aim of this book is to help prepare student teachers to be successful teaching in today's classrooms with students representing a variety of multiracial, multicultural, and multiethnic backgrounds. Through a straightforward, interactive, yet reflective format, student teachers are guided in learning teaching principles and strategies that reflect culturally responsive pedagogy.
