Despite having been used extensively in medieval building techniques, and despite the identification of the workshops where they were produced, there has been little academic interest in the production processes for terra cotta building materials. This book aims to fill this gap in the knowledge. The state of the art described in this book has hardly changed over the past twenty years; in general, very few excavations have been carried out in the workshops. This book provides insight into the production facilities by presenting the results of surveys locating the clay pits, kilns, pits used for treading and softening clay, moulding workshops, drying and storage rooms, and more, in the Ile-de-France, Champagne-Ardennes, Burgundy, Centre, Lower Normandy, Picardy and Franche-Comte regions of France. There has been a significant increase in the number of written sources in these regions over the past years, either in the form of publications or as more comprehensive studies of medieval construction sites. This volume is based on archaeological, bibliographical and ethnographical work on the terra cotta workshops and production methods and the various types of terra cotta materials produced.
