Swedish design is internationally renowned. Women have played an important role in that design from an early stage. At first they excelled primarily in the field of textiles traditionally a womens domain then came ceramics and subsequently glass. The seventeen designers presented here carry on and enhance a tradition of dynamic and talented women. Nowadays they work as a matter of course in all imaginable design fields, often in an interdisciplinary way with various methods and materials: in textiles, glass, ceramics, wood and metal, as interior designers, and with furniture, industrial and graphic design. These inspiring portraits were created by some of Sweden´s best-known design writers: Ulf Beckman, Dan Gordan, Hedvig Hedqvist, Lotta Lewenhaupt and Rebecka Tarschys. Susanne Helgeson draws a personal portrait of Pascale Cottard-Olsson, the woman behind the design gallery where all seventeen have exhibited. Design historian Kerstin Wickman presents the historical background. Carl Hjelte is responsible for the perceptive photography, multiple award-winning designer Patric Leo created the graphic design, and specialist design translator Fenela Childs produced the English text.
