The author/artist draws upon written, pictorial, sculptural and archaeological sources to reconstruct the appearance of the Roman soldier on all those occasions when he was not concealed by armour - that is, on most days throughout his career. The accessible text is accompanied by a wealth of black and white illustrations along with eight full colour plates by the author himself.
