Margaret Harper, a well-educated, artistic young woman from a highly academic, yet dysfunctional family, seeks freedom by marrying the rebellious, brilliant physicist Chris. 



Margaret yearns for a normal family life and Chris offers her stability, but Margaret is haunted by her childhood, and struggles to be happy. 



When Chris is offered the chance of a new life for them, they swap the stifling home counties for vibrant Rio de Janeiro. Despite Margaret’s determination to survive, the toll proves too much and she finally admits defeat. Chris agrees to abandon the possibilities that Rio held for him, but arriving home only brings the realisation that escaping Brazil was only the beginning of their problems
