Cole Family Civil War Letters
16 year old Edwin and 40 year old William, son and father, both enlisted n the 23rd Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers, on the same day during the Civil War. Their mother or wife saved all letters written to her and they are transcribed with little editing. Edwin served as a Drummer Boy until he was 18 and could carry a rifle. Father and son were both wounded, hospitalized, and captured and imprisoned in Libby Prison at the same time. Their experiences are all expressed in these more than 100 letters. I know that there are many historians that would be interested in these historic accounts of the war. Ships and officers are named. The Black Regiment is recognized and other important events and battles are recorded in these letters.
