The shortcoming of many of the studies conducted to date is that they focus solely on the female side, whereas here the authors believe that consideration should also be made of the ways in which men narrate, and therefore interpret, their own professional and organizational experience as well as that of their female colleagues.

The intention, in fact, is to show how gender roles, rules and organizational identities are produced by the interaction between men and women, and as such are not genetically or socially ascribed but are instead constructed by the reciprocal positioning of individuals, men and women, within organizations.
The purpose of the book is to make an innovative contribution, both empirical and theoretical, to understanding of the ways in which male and female are constructed in organizations.
