The Picts first appear in history when the Roman Empire was invading Britain. Their origins and the reason for their disappearance remain enigmatic; what is known of them today comes largely from archaeological data and the writings of their enemies. The Pictish culture played a key role in the early history of Britain, and the abiding image of a terrifying warlike people, raiding and fighting, their bodies tattooed with woad, lives on.
