1928. It is true that in Catholic times the civil authority, or persons of rank and wealth, often looked on the building of a church as a duty, an honor, or a privilege. It is very rare, however, in our own country at least, to meet with a noble edifice, like Saint Catharine's Memorial Church at Spring Lake, New Jersey, which is entirely the creation of a Catholic layman, and into which his personality has been knitted with a fullness perhaps never before equaled.
