In recent years college and university educators have been looking for new answers to the classic question, “What should every educated person know?” Searching for empirical answers, educators at the New England Resource Center for Higher Education at the University of Massachusetts at Boston launched an extensive study of colleges and universities that have attempted to redesign their general education curriculum in recent years. Much of the literature available has reported on planning for curriculum change; their study gave special attention to the implementation of the changes. This book is the outcome of the study, which included telephone interviews with faculty and administrators in 71 colleges and universities plus in-depth campus visits at 12 schools.
