In the early 1800s, many poor families south of the border were being uprooted from their land by the wealthy ranch barons of Mexico, exported to the US and traded as a labor force. This story is about one family attempting to escape with their lives when forced from their home during a land raid. Diego and Amelia de la Cruz, both in their mid-twenties, had one child, six-year-old Federico. They began a frightful journey beyond anyone's imagination with hopes of surviving and perhaps someday finding a better future, but first they had to escape the past that was closing in on them. This horrific journey would bring them face-to-face with death, sending them down a path that would strengthen their will to survive if only they could remain together. The long and weary struggle is a mind-bending and heart-rending road of abandonment, deceitfulness and sorrow.
