Efforts to use environmental magnetic techniques in India have been limited, probably because of lack of awareness of this fascinating discipline. The laboratory methods of determining magnetic properties are simple, rapid, cheap and non-destructive. Against this backdrop, the book on "Environmental Magnetism and its application in marine environment" brings light to relationships among the magnetic, petroleum hydrocarbons, heavy metals and texture sizes in marine sediments off Chennai, Bay of Bengal, India. It has been gainfully used in surface processes, sediment transportation, environmental pollution, impact of anthropogenic activities. The formation, transport, deposition and distribution of magnetic minerals in marine sediments off Chennai were explained. Magnetic minerals are sensitive to indicate the chemical and physical transformations, and may be detected and characterized at ppm level concentrations. Descriptions on the relationships among the environmental magnetic, geochemical and textural properties in marine sediments, make this book a truly enlightening experience to the geologist and geophysicist.
