A mysterious machine is found in a 10th century castle in the Champagne region of France, and Count Divange discovers it is the mythical talking head of Silvestre the Second, the Pope of the year 1000, probably made with the help of the Devil. When the Count suddenly disappears, his daughter and a detective investigate; their search takes them across Europe, where they discover that there are other people also searching, but for very different reasons.
