This story starts with the revolt of 1857 and how it threatened British rule all over North India. A sudden attack of a British officer by his sepoy, heralded the beginning of discontent that spread across the country. Mukherjee looks at these incidents and emphasies what has increasingly been issues of power, the nature of rebel violence and also the nature of the possible alternatives that might have emerged if the events had turned in a different way.
