In the days before central heating became so common, pictures like these would appear on the windows of houses after a frost, and I remember being fascinated by them as a child. Now, there are fewer of them to be seen (and maybe fewer frosts), and they are mostly on cars parked out of doors.

I have never heard anyone comment on their beauty, and with this book I wanted to draw attention to them, to share my delight and my gratitude.
