The authors of Joining a Community of Readers have arranged the readings of each chapter around a central theme to allow readers to revisit the theme, become familiar with the content, and develop a reading schema as they apply the skills.  A heavy emphasis on the active reading process is placed throughout the text, and is reinforced by the authors’ device of preparing, reading, and organizing (PRO).
