Rightsizing is an information systems (IS) philosophy and architecture based on deploying resources where they can do the most good. At a business level, rightsizing presents the opportunity to use information better, faster, and cheaper to meet business objectives. Rightsizing involves the movement of IS away from centralized mainframes or standalone LAN environments to enterprise-wide distributed systems. Several rightsizing technologies are emerging, and this volume provides an overview of Sun Microsystem's strategies and recommended methodology for rightsizing. KEY TOPICS: Covers such topics as peer-to-peer versus client-server computing, system and data access, tools and technologies, open interfaces, graphical user interfaces, how to rightsize, and how to take advantage of today's technologies to position for the future. Includes examples in industry-specific contexts and examples of how Sun itself is implementing rightsizing internally (e.g., how Sun combines its technology expertise with its own business requirements). MARKET: For upper-level management (CEOs, CIOs, and Department/Functional VPs) who have specific objectives and concerns about rightsizing, and for managers who have been given the task of implementing a rightsizing strategy.
