For courses in Student Success, First Year seminar, Study Skills, and for any program or individual seeking strategies for student athlete success.
Cornerstones for Student Athletes addresses specific challenges faced by college students who are attending as scholarship athletes. Part of the Cornerstones series, it is designed to address issues and provide success strategies for college student-athletes. Students will learn how to bring their “A” game to athletics and academics by focusing on fundamentals and demonstrating a passion for both. A Student-Athlete Preparedness Assessment helps students self-assess areas of strengths and weaknesses. Student-athletes are encouraged to take advantage of campus resources to assist them with problems, guidance, and deficiencies. Special tips for listening, reading, note-taking, and test-taking are included. Additional conversations focus on: NCAA rules and institutional rules that may impact student-athlete eligibility; an important discussion of drinking, drugs, tobacco, and gambling and the concerns they pose; information about dealing with booster club members; advice on the use of social media and pitfalls than can accompany FaceBook, Twitter, email, texting and others when used inappropriately. Emphasizing “life after college,” the module has student-athletes design a Fourth Quarter Plan that directs setting goals for each year of their college career with eyes on a future as a workplace professional.
