This book is the fruit of a long friendship between two periodontists whose aim is to promote periodontal health in Europe. They have been actively involved in the activities of the European Federation of Periodontology for the past 20 years and have participated together in the organizing committees of several EuroPerio meetings. Both authors have considerable clinical experience in periodontology and implantology. Stefan Renvert is from Sweden and Jean-Louis Giovannoli from France. Both studied in the United States in order to improve their specialist training. Thereafter, Stefan chose to devote his professional life to research and education, whereas Jean-Louis preferred to work as a periodontist in private practice. Stefan Renvert is now professor and research director in Oral Health Sciences at the University of Kristianstad, Sweden. Stefan also holds a position as visiting professor at the Dublin Dental University Hospital, Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland, and at Blekinge Institute of Technology, Karlskrona, Sweden. He has published over 150 papers in international and national journals.
One of his main research topics is related to diagnosis and treatment of peri-implant diseases. In this regard he is renowned as an international expert. Jean-Louis Giovannoli has his private practice in Paris, France. His clinical activity is limited to periodontology and implant dentistry. He is now director of Quintessence International and editor in chief of the journal Titane. Jean-Louis is one of the clinicians who at an early stage recognized that infections around implants occurred and that there was a lack of knowledge regarding how to clinically manage such conditions. Consequently, his experience in the treatment of peri-implantitis is unique. When the authors of this book began to lecture about infections around implants, they were met with great skepticism. Upon realizing that they shared an interest in how to handle biologic complications at implants, the idea emerged of sharing their joint experience and knowledge in this field with clinicians facing this problem in their everyday practice
