On 31 January 2007 the Registers of Scotland launched the Automated Registration of Title to Land (ARTL) system. ARTL represents a fundamental change in the process of Land Registration and was introduced into Scotland for dealings with the whole of registered interests in the Land Register. The law of execution of deeds therefore had to be radically overhauled where the ARTL system is used because of the requirement for digital signatures, meaning there are no witnesses as such.
