The first of three books with Miss Mary Dana and Quincy Adams Sawyer as amateur detectives, the story centers on the intrigues and sinister goings-on in the village of Mason's Corner (later named Fernborough) near Boston, Massachusetts. It is a folksy book about the people of New England and their antics. Quincy Adams Sawyer was one of the earliest motorized detectives.
