Doing Social Research: A Guide to Coursework is not a textbook on research methods but a practical guide for pupils on how to do their own social research.  It is designed to provide guidance on every aspect, and at every stage, of the coursework component of GCSE Sociology and Social Science courses, whether the coursework consists of one project using a variety of methods, or two or more shorter projects using one method.  The book includes step-by-step guides on how to use each of the main methods of data collection.

The text is interspersed with a large number of short exercises which aim to test pupils’ ability to apply the ideas in the book to the kind of research situations they are likely to encounter.  Each section contains a variety of examples taken from actual student projects and specially drawn cartoons designed to provoke discussion as well as amusement.

Doing Social Research provides a framework for study, giving support and guidance to less able pupils and a starting point and stimulus to the more able.  It provides the practice, information, illustration and example necessary for candidates to successfully complete the coursework requirements of GCSE Sociology and Social Science.
