Volume 2 of 2. These volumes present a biographical account of the life and work of Percy Bysshe Shelley, one of the greatest English romantic poets. Percy's life was singularly interesting and diverse. His friends unanimously testify that his character was one of gentleness, purity, generosity and strong affection. As a poet, he stands in the front rank and in some of his shorter poems he is unsurpassed. During his short, but wholly eventful life, Percy was expelled from Oxford with his friend Thomas Jefferson Hogg for circulating a pamphlet entitled "The Necessity of Atheism"; married Harriet Westbrook, who later committed suicide; then eloped with Mary Wollstone, the daughter of William Godwin, to which Shelley was a disciple. Even his death was fascinating...he was lost in a storm while sailing back from Pisa, his body washing ashore and later burned on a pyre.
