Aspects of crime and crime prevention on public transport discussed and analysed in the title include: Types and extent of public transport criminal activity (against the commuter as well as transport provider); drive-by shootings against minibus taxis and their impact; Fare evasion and strategies to reduce the extent of the problem; community/commuter on-board crime prevention strategies; formal crime prevention strategies, i.e. the different types of formal interventions used by transport providers in South Africa; vigilantism and on-board criminal activity; crime prevention through environmental design; the development of a community based model of crime prevention on public transport; the results of a survey of approximately 2000 commuters in Durban, South Africa as to their experience and witness of crime on public transport; and international comparisons of crime prevention strategies used on public transport, using the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom as benchmarks.
