A doctoral dissertation dealing with ceremonial enclosures, hillforts and fortified farms in Uppland, central Sweden during the Bronze Age and Early Iron Age. The author shows the diversity and complexity of an ancient monument category earlier designated simply as hillforts. The potential for illuminating pre-state political geography is emphasised.
