Born in the slums of Copenhagen, the author was the fourth of 11 children born to an alcoholic stone mason and the daughter of a blacksmith. His breakthrough work, the Danish classic "Pelle the Conqueror," appeared between 1906-1910, and in 1989 the film version won the Academy Award as Best Foreign Language Film.
