'Teach Yourself Yiddish' is the only self-access course on the market to teach the Yiddish language as well as aspects of Yiddish culture. The course comprises a text book and two audio CDs. The language is taught through dialogues, songs and other texts, some of which appear on the audio recording. Lively sketches and cartoons liven up the learning process, which is reinforced by written, listening and speaking exercises. The Yiddish language is presented in both Hebrew script and phonetic transliteration and, unusually, works outwards from the English alphabet, developing it phonetically towards its Yiddish counterparts. In the later stages of the course, the transliteration is dropped in favour of Hebrew script. Both printed and hand-written forms of the Hebrew script are taught.
