In the last decade, growth in Asia has outpaced growth in the developed economies. China and India are emerging as strong economies under transformation. The recent Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement signed between Singapore and India is likely to offer considerable opportunities to both sides for enhancing economic cooperation and increasing bilateral trade in goods and services. In order to build on these opportunities, it is important to understand the underlying transformation that is taking place. India is a federation comprising 28 states and seven union territories, with intertwined jurisdictions and shared responsibilities for economic activity. Studies at the national level, therefore, often ignore the significant differences among the states. State level analysis becomes all the more important to identify future opportunities. This book focuses on the interrelationships between economic development, governance, and business climate in the different states of India.
