Oxford, January 1273. Regent Master William Falconer and his companion, Thomas Symon, are on their way to Paris after Falconer received a cryptic message from Friar Roger Bacon, an old friend who has came into conflict with the church. Falconer finds his friend incarcerated in a friary and must come up with a plan to ensure his release.
