Book description: Kurt Kocherscheidt once said that art had to overstep the boundaries of the explicable. Powerful and simultaneously difficult, forceful and intensive, calm and elemental – Kocherscheidt’s work does not open to the viewer easily. It resists rapid interpretation and categorisation. Looking for "painting as painting, not as a translation” Kocherscheidt approached his ideal afresh each time and with subtlety and persistence. Radical and credible, he pushed forward with his art until November of 1992 when he died of a long heart ailment. It would be difficult to find a painter in the Austrian art world who evinced such an unbroken belief in painting. In a little less than three decades between 1966 and 1992 Kocherscheidt created an oeuvre for which a complete documentation has long been a desideratum. The present work catalogue includes approximately 500 pictures as well as all works in wood made after 1986 which have been documented on the basis of careful research. Expert contributions round off the overview of several periods of Kocherscheidt’s work. The life work of the artist is presented in a such way as to show that it still is and will be a topical and important voice in contemporary art discourse.
