When war breaks out in 1939, Sally Kennedy and Tessa Kilbride have already enjoyed several years of close friendship. Although superficially very different - Tessa is married to glamorous film star Sebastian while Sally's husband Nick is his accountant - they feel as close as sisters. Warm-hearted Tessa is content to be a homemaker, but Sally yearns for more.
