Fanny, who lives in a neighborhood of families with multiple children, is the only child of Mr. Ted and Clara Blanchard. Fanny is always lonely and wishes she had a brother or sister to play with her. She visits her East Asian friend, Sue, who has a brother and sister. Fanny confides in Sue that her parents are selfish and don't want to have other children to play with her and do other things together. She does not know that her parents were hiding a secret from her until she grew up. Clara's uterus was cancerous and had been removed, so she could never conceive again. Fanny gets a pet from a family friend and she names it Freckles. One day Freckles discovers an abandoned baby who is cared for by the hospital administration. Fanny and Freckles always visit the baby whom Fanny named Franco. When the hospital puts Franco up for adoption, the Blanchard's adopt him. Happily, Fanny gets the brother she had so much wished to have all her life, and a trusted pet, all of them playing, running, jumping, kicking, talking, and Freckles barking.
