Isaac Mason (1822-c1895) was a slave born in George Town. His mother was enslaved by Hannah Woodland and worked as her house servant. Isaac's father was a freeman and worked as one of Woodland's overseers. When Mason reached the age of twenty-five, he discovered that he was about to be sold to a slave-trader in New Orleans. Isaac ran away and eventually reached Philadelphia where he found work. In 1860 he moved to Haiti as part of businessman James Redpath's emigration program. After that Mason returned to the United States to expose his experience.
